In Richard III, as in all of Shakespeare’s writing, more problematic are the words that are still in use but that now have different meanings. In the opening scene of Richard III, for example, the word measures has the meaning of “dances”; front is used where we would say “forehead,” halt where we would say “limp,” and tempers where we would say “guides” or “directs.”
