Sua última visita foi feita por Mike Starr, primeiro baixista do Alice in Chains, no que acredita ser um dia antes de sua morte, em 2002. Layne, muito debilitado fisicamente, informou que sentiu o fantasma de sua falecida noiva próximo dele e o convidando para “uma transição”.
