“Leverage” has a somewhat of strategic connotation (and could be taken the wrong way, depending on context), but is a shorter way of saying “take advantage of” something. “Parlay” also has a gaming/strategy connotation and would work better as a way to describe something smaller rolling into something bigger/better, but it is less commonly used in regular speech.

To "take advantage of" something means to make good use of that thing (see the definition below), so I'd keep its use to a minimum, so that when it is actually used, it is more impactful, perhaps at a climactic moment along your narrative.
