Most texts refer to him in passing as the “brilliantly conservative”, “autocratic” president of the National Baptist Convention, a figure opposed to the Civil Rights Movement or else a man with a personal grudge or a neurotic dislike of Martin Luther King.

But this binary overlooks the powerful strand of black conservatism represented by Rev. Joseph Harrison Jackson (1900-1990), the long-time president of the National Baptist Convention. Historians have tended to dismiss Jackson’s role in the civil rights movement by representing his disputes with Martin Luther King, Jr. as being over power rather than principle.
27 de jun. de 2011 · Joseph Jackson had a few talents of his own, boxing and music. He played guitar as a member of the singing group the Falcons during the 1950s. His brother Luther was also part of the group. After the group could not secure a record deal, Joseph Jackson gave up his dreams to work full time as a crane operator at US Steel to support his family.
