The Paper Chase has some great performances, literate screenwriting, sensitive direction and handsome production. Timothy Bottoms is excellent as the puzzled law student, Lindsay Wagner is very good as his girl, and John Houseman, the veteran legit and film producer-director-writer, is outstanding as a hard-nosed but urbane law professor.

The book tells the story of Hart, a first-year law student at Harvard, and his experiences with Professor Charles Kingsfield, a brilliant and demanding contracts instructor whom he both idolizes and finds incredibly intimidating.
A snowstorm strands Kingsfield on his way to the airport. When he knocks on the nearest door to use the phone, it is Hart's apartment. When they learn the airport is closed, Kingsfield stays for dinner and conversation. Across town, Mrs. Nottingham steps into Ernie's Tavern, seeking shelter while waiting for the bus.
The Paper Chase is a quiet, thoughtful film about an unlikely subject: the joy of learning. It was released in 1973 and certainly looks its age, especially the clothes and hairstyles.
