Tafsir ibn Kathir terkenal di seluruh dunia Islam dan juga dalam kalangan Muslim di dunia Barat. Ibnu Kathir terkenal dengan daya ingatannya yang kuat berkaitan dengan Hadis-hadis Nabi Muhammad dan seluruh al-Quran. Beliau juga terkenal sebagai kadi, pakar sejarah, dan juga sebagai seorang muhaddith dan mufasir.
Ibn Kathir scrisse un notissimo commentario del Corano, il Tafsir al-Qurʾān al-ʿadhīm (per i musulmani sunniti, secondo solo al tafsīr del Ṭabarī), assai consultato per la sua affidabilità e la ricchezza di ʾaḥādīth (Tafsir cui ricorrono spesso i movimenti salafiti).
