Charles Lyell, born in 1797, and Scottish by birth was one among the last generation of British polymaths who contributed much to the development of geology as a scientific discipline. He laid the foundation of modern geology and outlined his geological vision supported by global examples in a treatise called the Principles of Geology.
Charles Lyell was born in 1797 at Kinnordy House in Forfarshire (now Angus) into a wealthy family. He grew up in the New Forest in Hampshire where, encouraged by his father, he developed a keen interest in natural history. In 1816, Charles went to Oxford University to study classics but also attended geology lectures by William Buckland.
