Josef Albers was born in Bottrop, a coal-mining city in the industrial Ruhr Valley, on 19 March 1888. His father was a general contractor who was proficient in carpentry, house-painting, plumbing, and other crafts; for the rest of his life, Josef would consider that the way his father trained him in the materials and techniques of these crafts was of vital importance to him.

By the time of his death, he had made more than two hundred prints in a wide variety of mediums, and had influenced generations of students in both Europe and the United States through his teachings.

Josef Albers nació en Bottrop (Alemania) en 1888. Pionero de la modernidad, fue profesor, escritor, pintor y teórico del color, conocido sobre todo por sus Homages to the Square, que pintó entre 1950 y 1976, y por su innovadora publicación de 1963 Interaction of Color.Josef conoció a su mujer, Anni Albers, en 1922 en la escuela de la Bauhaus, en Weimar, donde era docente.
