Alfred Kubin lod sig tidligt inspirere af kunstnere som Max Klinger, Odilon Redon og Aubrey Beardsley, men fandt omkring 1908 sin egen symbolistisk prægede stil, der afspejlede hans pessimistiske livsopfattelse..
