His erotic illustrations depicting men engaged in acts of sex with one another were given to his friend, Edward le Bas, in 1959 and marked “very private.”
Keynes and Duncan Grant were in a serious relationship several years earlier and it is possible that Bathers by the Pond is a depiction of several of Grant’s lovers, including David Garnett. Garnett had strawberry blond hair and a ruddy complexion that is recognisable in the figure in the top right-hand corner of this work.
Duncan Grant’s Abstract Kinetic Collage Painting with Sound 1914 (fig.1) is a genuinely radical work in British art history. Purely abstract, modernist paintings by British artists are rare in the early twentieth century; Grant, along with his partner Vanessa Bell, made a significant proportion of the few we have.
