Gaylord Nelson. Gaylord Nelson is perhaps best known as the father of Earth Day. But he also served as The Wilderness Society’s counselor after his career as a U.S. senator and governor of Wisconsin. Nelson’s efforts contributed to the passage of various environmental laws, including the Environmental Protection Act.
Gaylord Nelson. 1916 – 2005. Inducted 1986. “Earth Day may be the turning point in American history.”. Former governor of Wisconsin (1958-62) and U.S. Senator (1963-80), Nelson has been chairman of the Wilderness Society since 1981. As governor and state legislator, Nelson was a strong supporter and innovator in conservation programs.
Gaylord Nelson, sometimes known as the father of Earth Day, was born in Clear Lake, Wisconsin in 1916. It was here he first realized the plight that the earth was suffering at the hands of local timber companies. He left Wisconsin for college and graduated with a degree in political science from San Jose State University in California.
