Mendes groeide op in Pickering, zo'n 30 km ten noordoosten van het centrum van Toronto. Zijn vader is van Portugese afkomst en zakenman, zijn moeder van Britse afkomst en makelaar. Hij heeft een vijf jaar jongere zus. Shawn woont in Toronto, Ontario, waar hij ook naar school ging. Hij hield als kind erg van bakken en skateboarden.
