23 de may. de 2023 · Wardell’s career and style of playing are a bit more fleshed out in the following insert notes to Wardell Gray Quintet: Live at The Haig 1952 [Fresh Sound FSRCD 157] by Mike Baille: “Gray was born in Oklahoma City in 1921, but actually grew up in Detroit where he studied clarinet at the celebrated Cass Tech, switching later to the alto saxophone.
Wardell Gray played with nearly every major figure in jazz history, and his discography is a wonder to digest. Unfortunately, much of his recorded legacy remains unissued or out of print – which is particularly astonishing considering the quality of this body of work.
19 de feb. de 2022 · The version of Blue Lou is, happily, the six-minute one graced by classic piano from Garner and eloquent tenor from Wardell, which was much better than the shorter version elsewhere. Both are on Properbox 66 (The Wardell Gray Story). While this new album is a fine standalone collection, much recommended, you might prefer the 77-track Proper.
