Review by Sean Baker 6. Serious contender for my fave film of the year. I wasn't expecting it to be as funny as it is. Elisabeth Moss had me in tears. Alex Ross Perry's dialogue and direction are tight. And Sean Price Williams's 35mm 2 perf and 4 perf cinematography is lush and exciting.
Although Her Smell openly evokes Courtney Love in its title and key details, Perry avoids biopic cliché by giving just enough time to supporting characters—bandmates, family and, in a resonant performance, Eric Stoltz as Becky’s harried manager—to craft a fascinating study of the unstable relationship between star and all of those dependent on the fame they both relish and resent.
