When Trollhunter starts having sold out midnight showings several times a year and there's toys/cosplay, then we can talk about it being a cult film. Fight Club didn't struggle as much as you think it did. It made 100 million off of its 63 million budget. Beyond that, cult movies have to be polarizing by nature.
