Jean Todt aloitti autourheilu-uransa rallin maailmassa. Hän toimi kymmenen vuoden ajan kartanlukijana useille suomalaisille kuljettajille (Timo Mäkinen, Rauno Aaltonen ja Hannu Mikkola) vuoteen 1981 asti. Tämän jälkeen hän siirtyi johtotehtäviin Peugeot'n rallitalliin. Hänen kaudellaan Peugeot voitti rallin maailmanmestaruudet vuosina 1985 ja 1986.
