Parminder Nagra was born on 5 October 1975 in Leicester, United Kingdom to parents who emigrated from the Punjab, India, in the 1960s. She is the eldest of four children. In 1994, she was a chorus member in the musical Nimai but later she was switched from the chorus to replace the lead actress. She started her career in theatre.
