Matt began playing the flute at age 8 and by the age of 18, he had won the All-Ireland Flute Championship and had a string of successes in National Fleadh Cheoil and Oireachtas. He moved to Dublin in the mid 1960’s where he started playing in the music scene and became acquainted with Paddy Moloney. He was invited to join The Chieftains in 1979.

Matt Molloy (born 12 January 1947) is an Irish musician, from a region known for producing talented flautists.As a child, he began playing the flute and won the All-Ireland Flute Championship at nineteen. Considered one of the most brilliant Irish musicians, his style that adapts piping techniques to the flute has influenced many contemporary Irish flute players.

A Dubliner, he first became interested in traditional Irish music in the 1960’s, when he and some workmates hitched to fleadhanna ceoil all over Ireland, sleeping in haybarns and eating tins of Denny’s stew!
