History. In 1918, following the war, the London County Council wanted to strengthen non-vocational education. It approved the opening of five literary institutes: Plumstead and Woolwich, Marylebone, Dalston, Peckham, and City Literary Institute (City Lit).They took their first students in September 1919. At the time, it was a radically different approach to adult education.
City Lit has an impressive history and a strong commitment to education. Since opening in 1919, we have played a significant role in providing opportunities to a diverse range of learners across London. With over 5,000 courses available, City Lit has clearly evolved to meet the educational needs and interests of our community.
9 reviews. GB. 3 May 2024. Verified. City Lit inspires. City Lit offers a fantastic range of courses, over many subjects. In a great part of London, I have most recently enjoyed some short courses associated to bookbinding (which I study locally at evening class) - gold tooling and leather dyeing.
