John Glenn, né le 18 juillet 1921 à Cambridge (dans l'Ohio) et mort le 8 décembre 2016 à Columbus (dans le même État), est un astronaute et un homme politique américain. En 1962, à bord de la capsule de la mission spatiale Mercury-Atlas 6 , Glenn fait trois fois le tour de la Terre et devient ainsi le premier Américain à effectuer un vol orbital .
John Glenn był dublerem Alana Sheparda [4], który 5 maja 1961 roku wykonał suborbitalny lot kosmiczny oraz Virgila Grissoma, który 21 lipca 1961 roku uczestniczył w podobnym locie. 20 lutego 1962 roku został pierwszym amerykańskim astronautą, który wykonał lot orbitalny [4] na pokładzie statku kosmicznego Mercury 6.
