Soft Machine se formó en 1966 por Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, Kevin Ayers y Daevid Allen ().Wyatt ya había trabajado con Allen en el Daevid Allen Trio en 1963, donde Ratledge se les unía a veces para echarse un palomazo y Ayers venía de tocar con Wilde Flowers en 1964.
