Due to government mandates to stop the spread of the virus, we can’t send Ellis Marsalis off like we wanna—with a second line. In that light, I decided to organize a virtual tribute to Ellis Marsalis.

6 de abr. de 2020 · Ellis Marsalis died on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at the age of 85. “There’s no logic to how I got into music,” said Marsalis in a 2014 interview explaining that neither of his parents played an instrument. “There was only one radio station in the city of New Orleans and its call letters were WJBW and I listened to that whenever I could.”
Marsalis ist Vater der berühmten Jazzmusiker Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo und Jason Marsalis. Er war außerdem Lehrer einiger bekannter Jazzmusiker aus der Generation seiner Söhne, nämlich Nicholas Payton, Donald Harrison, Terence Blanchard und anderen. Zu Ehren des Musikers wurde 2011 das Ellis Marsalis Music Centre eröffnet.
