In 1980, as the NWOBHM hit its peak, Demolition matched Iron Maiden’s debut and Saxon ’s Wheels Of Steel for raw energy, and its dirty, streetwise “heavy metal rock‘n’roll” had Girlschool acclaimed as ‘the female Motörhead’.
Girlschool. British heavy metal band. Originally conceived in London in 1975 as a pub covers band called Painted Lady by Enid Williams, Kim McAuliffe and Deirdre Cartwright. The band changed name and musical direction in early 1978 upon the addition of Kelly Johnson and Denise Dufort to the roster.

Girlschool are an all-female British rock band founded in 1978. The original members Kim McAuliffe, Enid Williams, Kelly Johnson and Denise Dufort came from the club cover band Painted Lady. During the early 1980s the band was one of the relevant groups of the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM) movement, entering the British charts with both singles and albums.
