The swift and overwhelming victory over the world’s fourth-largest military stunned allies and adversaries alike, and imbued the U.S. military—particularly the Air Force—with an aura of invincibility.
The Desert Air Force (DAF), also known chronologically as Air Headquarters Western Desert, Air Headquarters Libya, the Western Desert Air Force, and the First Tactical Air Force (1TAF), was an Allied tactical air force created from No. 204 Group RAF under RAF Middle East Command in North Africa in 1941 to provide close air support to the British Eighth Army against Axis forces.

It proved that New Zealand could contribute effectively to an international operation and enhanced the RNZAF’s reputation with our close allies.
Few believed Desert Storm would turn out to be a model air campaign when it started. Although the coali-tion had spent five months preparing, the largest unknown was how many casualties would result. “Basically, this is a fairly strong opponent—the world’s fourth-largest armed forces and the world’s sixth-largest air force,” McPeak said.
