In the last phone call to her mother before her death, Spungen admitted that she had been seriously injured in fights with Vicious, including a broken nose and torn ear. She claimed that the frequent beatings had stopped for a time, but picked back up when Vicious became depressed due to not being able to find work after the Sex Pistols broke up .
