Pola Negri was a brilliant Polish star of silent movies and the first European to launch a successful career in Hollywood. She was born in 1897 in Lipno in Poland. In 1914 she debuted in "Slave of Desires" quickly becoming the most popular actress in Warsaw.

She moved to Warsaw, Poland in 1902 and spent her formative years in poverty. As a teenager, she auditioned for the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet and was accepted.
Serge Mdivani (1903-1936) married actress Pola Negri (1897-1987), in 1927. Negri was a world-famous actress and had had love affairs with Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino, but when she lost her fortune in the Stock Market Crash of 1929, Serge abandoned her and took up with opera singer Mary McCormic (1889-1981), one of the most famous sopranos of the 1920s and 1930s.

En el cine trabajó en su país natal bajo la dirección de Aleksander Hertz; más adelante en Alemania, en 1917, en el teatro gracias a Max Reinhardt, y en el cine con Ernst Lubitsch.
