A boston terrier eredetéről többféle legenda is kering, de az biztos hogy a fajta először Massachusetts állam Boston városában tűnt fel az 1800-as évek végén. A feljegyzések szerint a fajta a Judge nevű kantól származik, ami egy angol terrier – angol bulldog keverék volt, utódait pedig francia bulldoggal keresztezték.
