There are some very funny passages, particularly involving Mr Polly’s dreadful, cringeworthy family. But Mr Polly is not precisely a man of action, and although this is the whole point, it does tend to weigh down the film’s ability to get going. Half way through, suddenly, Mr Polly, and the film, receive a decided kick in the behind.
This film is something of a family favourite. John Mills is almost always good value, and he doesn't disappoint here. In Alfred Polly we have the average little man who dreams of great adventure, but is neither intellectually equipped, nor has the emotional stature to see past his uneventful march to the grave.

By 2007, the film version of the History of Mr Polly was dated. The black and white film had not aged well and the occasional television performances were not of a high visual quality. Therefore praise goes to ITV for remaking this classic HG Wells story for the small screen. Often remakes for the big screen fail to impress.
