James Dickey est un auteur et poète américain. Son père, Eugène, est avocat. Au lycée et collège à Clemson, Dickey pratique le football et donne la promesse d'une carrière sportive. En 1942, il interrompt ses études et rejoint l'armée de l'air. Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il sert comme pilote dans le Pacifique Sud.
