Augustus' wife became blind and he left her and went to America with another woman with whom he lived as man and wife.

He was barely spoken about in the family again. A few years ago, I travelled to Chicago to research what had happened to my great x4 uncle and Bertha, the woman who had been brave enough to run away with him.
