Harris was born on July 29, 1940, in northeastern Louisiana. She was a gifted student and began college at the age of 16. In 1961 she graduated from Southern University, a historically Black university, with a degree in chemistry. Harris received a master’s degree in chemistry from Atlanta University in 1963.
