María Callas nació el 2 de diciembre de 1923 en Nueva York. Hija de George Kalogeropoulos y Evangelia Dimitriadis, emigrantes griegos. Sus padres vieron en el enorme talento musical de su hija, entonces feúcha, miope y más bien gordita, la puerta de escape a la miseria familiar.
