Ernesto Gastaldi was born on September 10, 1934 in Graglia, Vercelli. He received his diploma in direction and screenwriting from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in 1957. His graduate project, inspired by his fondness for the Mondadori giallo paperbacks, was La strada che porta lontano ("The Road to a Distant Door" ), a strong candidate for the very first Italian thriller.
