14 de mar. de 2020 · The fact that renowned ballet master and choreographer Marius Petipa (1818–1910) has not, until now, been the subject of a full-fledged biography came as a shock to me. Well, not really. As a dance historian, I’m aware of the many lacunae in the researched history of our art and of the difficulties in achieving publication of documentary dance-history studies.

Petipa staged his first revival of Giselle in 1884 for the Prima Ballerina Maria Gorshenkova. For this revival, Ludwig Minkus composed a new pas de deux that Petipa added to the first act for Gorshenkova.This pas de deux did not find a permanent home in the ballet, but the music has survived and it resurfaces now and then when used in ballet galas.. Marius Petipa (plným jménem Michel Victor Marius Alphonse Petipa, rusky Marius Ivanovič Petipa) – narozen 11. března 1818 v Marseille, zemřel 14. července 1910 (1. července juliánského kalendáře) na Krymu. Pohřben je v Petrohradu.
Marius Petipa (1818-1910), son of the French ballet master Jean Petipa, made his debut as dancer in 1828, in a version of Pierre Gardel’s Le Dansomanie staged by his father. In 1847, he was engaged as a dancer with the Imperial Theatres in St Petersburg. Seven years later, he became a teacher at the Imperial Ballet School in the same city.
