At their trial, both were found guilty, the Crown "proving" her complicity through her surviving love letters to her lover. Innocent of murder, Mrs. Thompson was hanged for adultery.

Percy's wife, Edith Jesse Graydon Thompson and Bywaters were found guilty of murdering her husband. Freddie Bywaters was a classmate of Edith Thompson's younger brother and known to her family.
