Duke lifted off aboard the Lunar Module (LM) Orion to rejoin Thomas K. “Ken” Mattingly, who had been conducting science from lunar orbit aboard the Command Module (CM) Casper to characterize the Moon’s surface and environment.
Charlie Duke is a former NASA astronaut, retired Brigadier General in the U.S. Air Force, fighter pilot and test pilot. As Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 16 in 1972, he became the 10th and youngest person to walk on the Moon. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina and raised in Lancaster, South Carolina, Charlie excelled in school.
