Matthew Robert Smith (born 28 October 1982) is an English actor. He is best known for his roles as the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor in the BBC series Doctor Who (2010–2013), Daemon Targaryen in the HBO series House of the Dragon (2022–present) and Prince Philip in the Netflix series The Crown (2016–2017), the latter of which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

Smith begon als een voetballer maar moest in 2003 zijn carrière opgeven vanwege een rugblessure. Na enkele theaterrollen maakte hij in 2006 de overstap naar de televisie als acteur. In 2007 speelde hij zijn eerste belangrijke rol als Danny in de BBC -serie Party Animals en in hetzelfde jaar speelde hij zijn eerste West End -theaterrol.
Matt Smith doesn’t use Google Maps. He likes the “adventure”, he says, of finding his own way around. Hence our current quest, on a muggy summer’s afternoon in London, to find the nearest pub — a journey he appears to be undertaking as much in hope as expectation. But then, travelling hopefully is very much the Matt Smith way.
