In November 1990, just as the drama of Margaret Thatcher's downfall was unfolding in Westminster, a parallel political epic was beginning on British TV screens.

A prolific actor on stage and screen, Richardson won greatest acclaim as the vulpine Francis Urquhart in House of Cards (1990), which won him a BAFTA. Two sequels followed, with other highlights including Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979), Private Schultz (1981), The Magician's House (1999), Gormenghast (2000) and many others.
