28 de jun. de 2023 · Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay got her start as a session singer when she was just a teenager in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and her voice appeared on iconic hits by Percy Sledge, Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, and others. Eventually, she moved to California in pursuit of adventure, and that’s what she found when she met Jerry Garcia and joined the Grateful Dead.
In addition, Donna Jean & the Tricksters also tackled Will McFarlane’s No Better Way and revisited Keith and Brian Godchaux’s Farewell Jack. Considering the number of voices that contributed to the authorship of the endeavor’s 12 tunes, it’s not surprising that the group shifts gears quite frequently, which is both its strength and its weakness.
Donna Jean would eventually re-marry when she met another Bay Area musician, bass player David MacKay, and the two moved back to her hometown of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. In 2009, Donna formed a new band, The Donna Jean Godchaux Band with Jeff Matson, also referred to as Donna Jean and the Tricksters, a seven-piece rock band featuring some of her early gospel and soul influences.
