25 de oct. de 1990 · I was introduced to Michael Franks from this CD. I was living in Atlanta, Georgia in 1989, and this old friend was a huge music lover and he wanted me to listen to this album he bought in 1978. He had the CD and I was immediately hooked from the first track "The Lady Wants to Know." The melody and laid-back delivery of Michael's vocals grabbed me.
After the success of The Art of Tea, Michael Franks was able to more confidently move closer to the kind of music he wanted to make. Employing a more exotic Brazilian feel on Sleeping Gypsy, with lush orchestration (courtesy of veteran jazz arranger and conductor Claus Ogerman), Franks moved his acoustic guitar work to the background to create a romantic sound with no sappiness.
Trzeci album Sleeping Gypsy, zawierający piosenkę The Lady Wants to Know, był częściowo nagrany w Brazylii. W tym czasie Franks zaczął występować na scenie z instrumentem cabasa w utworach, w których nie akompaniował sobie na gitarze.
