This is one of the novels I remember best.

In The Time Traders there is an effort to discover the source of the alien technology the Russians are using. Ross Murdock travels back in time to Britain in the year 2000 B.C. to uncover the Russian base of operations. The novel contains some violence.
The Time Traders is the first book in Norton's series of YA (called juveniles at the time) adventures featuring reformed delinquent Ross Murdock. The novel first appeared in 1958 (as did I!), and it is a fairly simple and straight forward story of making good through pluck and luck.
A sequel to Time Traders, the Cold War race through time remains Norton's background. Both search for abandonded wrecks of a race that had interstellar travel in Man's infancy. Travis Fox, Apache, joins Ross Murdock and Dr. Gordon Ashe, time agents, in an attempt to transfer an intact alien ship through 20,000 years to the present... mayhem ensues.
