In fact, there were two: one a wooden railway bridge and the other a ferroconcrete structure built using imported bridge sections from Japanese-controlled Java. It’s this structure, Bridge 277, that still stands and is a famous local tourist attraction.

And the bridge would have to be the largest bridge ever built, nearly twice the length of the famed Menai Suspension Bridge, which had heralded the age of great suspension bridges when it opened in 1826.
Rakotzbrücke was commissioned in 1860 by a local knight. The bridge is also known under the name Devil’s Bridge, due to that this bridge was so dangerous and miraculous that it must have been built by th Devil himself. It’s a thin arch stretching over the waters of lake Rakotzee and is built by hand with various local stones.
