Balliol was the birthplace of the degree of PPE in the 1920 s, and the College has long remained a major centre for the study of PPE.Nowadays, Balliol PPE is distinctive in three related ways.. Firstly, we have a particularly large school of PPE undergraduates, and the College is committed to maintaining a strong teaching team in each of the three subjects.
Not all courses are offered by any one college. Balliol offers a significant number and range of courses across the Humanities, Social Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences, reflecting the many academic interests within our community.
Balliol is in the centre of Oxford, on three sites: The main College site in Broad Street (OX 1 3 BJ)Jowett Walk (OX 1 3 TL) and the Master’s Field (new residential buildings, adjacent to the College sports ground).These are collectively known as the Dervorguilla site.
Balliol College was founded in 1263 y John I of Balliol, a landowner from Barnard Castle in County Durham. It’s said that the founder abducted a bishop after a dispute over land and forced him to support a group of Oxford scholars – thus, Balliol College was born.
Balliol also runs a Day Nursery in Rawlinson Road in north Oxford, which gives priority to those with a connection to Balliol, such as staff, students and Fellows. Balliol has an excellent kitchen, which provides lunch and dinner in Hall seven days a week during term time, including options for vegetarians, vegans and those with special dietary requirements.
Physics at Balliol College. Among all the colleges in the University, Balliol has one of the largest intakes of Physics and Physics & Philosophy students, admitting eight to ten across both courses. Balliol is one of only a handful of colleges to have four full-time Tutorial Fellows in Physics.
