After a couple lineup shuffles, Tubeway Army -- Gary Numan (aka Valeriun), Paul Gardiner (aka Scarlett), and Numan's uncle Jess Lidyard (aka Rael) -- debuted in February of 1978 with "That's Too Bad" on Beggars Banquet, a furious fusion of punk and pop, but darkly cold and clinical.
Gary Numan — real name: Gary Webb — was born in London in 1958. Webb began teaching himself to play guitar in his teens. At 19, he joined his first band, Mean Street, though he was ejected from the band after only a few gigs.He then auditioned for the role of guitarist in a band called The Lasers and got the job, immediately hitting it off with the band's bassist, Paul Gardiner.
This first album was meant to be another punk endeavor, but Gary discovered a mini Moog synthesizer in the studio. This changed everything, Gary found a new toy. There were bands like this before Gary (Ultravox comes to mind), but somehow he broke through with the Tubeway Army appears on "Top of the Pops" in the UK.
