Clifford Odets (July 18, 1906 – August 14, 1963) [1] was an American playwright, screenwriter, and actor. In the mid-1930s, he was widely seen as the potential successor to Nobel Prize–winning playwright Eugene O'Neill, as O'Neill began to withdraw from Broadway's commercial pressures and increasing critical backlash. Clifford Odets (born July 18, 1906, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.—died August 14, 1963, Hollywood, California) was a leading dramatist of the theatre of social protest in the United States during the 1930s.
Beginning with "Waiting for Lefty" (1935), Odets quickly became the most famous young playwright in America. In the next four years he wrote five more plays, including "Awake and Sing!"; "Golden Boy" and "Rocket to the Moon", whose histrionics well suited the Group's exuberant style.
