They were human and their struggles were shown to be on par with - if not worse - than those of the American troops, and that I think is an excellent point worth making. On the minus side, of course, the film couldn't get away from some very, very uncomfortable sentimentality, but that's to be expected from a Gibson film.

We Were Soldiers was so close to being a great Vietnam war film. It had intense and visceral combat sequences, strong humanistic and emotionally-driven dimensions, good acting, and a satisfying conclusion. It did also attempt to humanise the enemy, not by a lot, but more than 90% of war films.
