Lace and Whiskey is Cooper’s eccentric love letter to vintage Hollywood and pop culture. Ditching his devilish alter ego for a noir-style private investigator, he tries out a slew of styles, including a sentimental ballad wrapped in velvety strings and crooner vocals (“You and Me”) and a frantic rockabilly number recorded like an old Sun single (“Ubangi Stomp”).

A heavy-drinking detective (from the 1940s), Escargot is a flawed man but much less sinister in nature compared to previous characters. “’Lace and Whiskey’ is an album many fans love to hate, though why is a bit of a mystery.

This album is better than its reputation and fits perfectly in the block of his 4 great 70's-solo albums (Nightmare to Inside). Sure, it lacks the classic Alice rock-elements, but it has a great variety of styles, compositions (thanks to Dick Wagner) and arrangements thanks to Bob Ezrin, always loved his cathedralestques productions).
