Penelope comes to the fore at a time when potential suitors for Helen, daughter of Tyndareus, were gathering in Sparta. Amongst the suitors was Odysseus, son of Laertes, but the Ithacan soon realised that his claim was overshadowed by many other Suitors of Helen. Odysseus therefore set his eyes upon Penelope, another beautiful princess, although not as beautiful as Helen.
