Hutchinson, Mary (1770-1859) Mary Wordsworth, born Hutchinson, was the wife of the poet William Wordsworth. William and Mary had known each other since childhood and married on 4 October 1802 at Brompton in Yorkshire.
Mary Barnes, the daughter of Sir Hugh Barnes and Winifred Strachey Barnes, was born in 1889. She spent her early childhood in India before being sent to boarding school in England. In 1910 she married a lawyer, St John Hutchinson. In 1911 her cousin, Lytton Strachey, introduced her to the Bloomsbury Group, a group of friends that discussed literary and artistic issues.
With financial prospects, Wordsworth married Mary Hutchinson on October 2, 1802. The settlement helped to support a growing family and also allowed the Wordsworths to continue their generosity to various friends and men of letters, many of whom came to stay at Dove Cottage, sometimes for months on end.
