In this groundbreaking, award-winning book, James Bamford traces the NSA’s origins, details its inner workings, and explores its far-flung operations.

  2. The Puzzle Palace was recommended to me as the definitive historical background to more recent descriptions of various national security organisations. It's old (1982) but an outstanding history of the NSA. It's definitely a historical / investigative work rather than a thriller, but there's plenty of richness to interest a casual reader.

  7. In this remarkable tour de force of investigative reporting, James Bamford exposes the inner workings of America's largest, most secretive, and arguably most intrusive intelligence agency. The NSA has long eluded public scrutiny, but The Puzzle Palace penetrates its vast network of power and unmasks the people who control it, often with shocking disregard for the law.
